Government Digital Service (GDS)

Senior Interaction Design: November 2021 - Present

Key Responsibilities:

I have been working on GOV.UK Forms to create a form building platform that helps civil servants create accessible online forms that can be used by citizens to interact with government, reducing the need for PDFs. As part of my time working on GOV.UK Forms, I have helped design the original iteration of the platform, building HTML prototypes using the GOV.UK Prototype Kit, to test the platform concept. I then contributed to the design of the overall form creation journey and interactions for new priority features to help us adapt the platform to bring more forms onboard. Some of the features I have worked on to date include:

  • question routing - this allows form creators to control the journey a form filler will see depending on answers given so that form fillers only answer the questions that are relevant to them
  • payment links - this allows form fillers to pay a fee using a GOV.UK Pay link (another GOV.UK service) so that they can complete their whole task in a single journey
  • confirmation emails - this gives form fillers the option to receive a “receipt” of their submission as they often need proof or reassurance that the task was completed

While working at GDS I have become a mentor to a number of mentees who have been exploring interaction design as a career. As part of the One Million Mentors programme, I supported my mentee through the transition from a front-end developer role to become an interaction designer with a UK Government department.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

UX Designer: June 2020 - November 2021

Key Responsibilities:

I have influenced organisational ways of working, moving from a waterfall approach to agile. Using my knowledge to trigger change within my multidisciplinary team and the wider organisation.

I have helped establish user centred design within the organisation, creating a design manual for new joiners; adapted the GDS prototype kit to incorporate the brand guidelines in collaboration with the web communications team; managed the HSE Digital GitHub account; investigated and proposed the creation of a design system for HSE to meet the complex needs of both our users and the organisation in a more consistent way. I’ve also been involved in the expansion of the design team at HSE.

HMRC

Interaction Designer: January 2018 - June 2020

I have worked on multiple projects across the customs area of the organisation, and on a cross cutting project taking a service design approach to unifying the many services in this business area.

A number of the services I have worked on have been assessed under the HMRC assessment and successfully progressed to the next phase. I am a trained HMRC assessor, which means I understand the GDS Service Standard principles well and can advise on how projects should meet them.
